Decoy Competition

Hey, all you decoys, helpers, bad guys, (and girls!), Dog Sports Magazine recognizes that without good decoys, all the biting dog world would be in trouble. We want to recognize YOU in a trial, just as much as the dog teams. Come out to the Dog Sports Open, and strut your stuff! You get to work the trial, and will be judged by a separate judge, just like the dog and handler teams. Cash awards, and trophies will be given at the end of the trial to the best DECOYS. Now, not only the dog handlers get something for their efforts.

There is no need to try out, or be certified with any organization. We do want you to be in good physical shape, be willing to work dogs, and come with your own suit.

Plan on coming out to work, though. Last year we had 52 dog team entries, and 11 decoys. We will be doing this over a two day weekend, instead of just one day like last year.

There will be an introduction of all the decoys to the crowd of spectators and dog handlers, and then a small physical test. Make sure that your suit is properly fitted, and will protect you from both upper body biters, and leg dogs. All decoys should come prepared with an athletic protector (cup).

This trial is to allow you (within reason) to show your skills, personality, and knowledge of dogs. Bring along props that you think might be helpful. You will be scored on the following criteria:

  • Ability to work at different levels. We have beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The decoys should be able to increase the difficulty of their work accordingly.

  • Ability to follow the judges instruction and to fulfill the concept of the scenario.

  • Physical ability. This does not mean that you will have to have the ability to do French Ring style work, but can you conserve your energy and work at the same level throughout the day.

  • Style and Personality. There will be an award for crowd/handler favorite. Last year's winner will be hard to beat. Can you have fun while working dogs? What is your acting ability while working? Can you show some imagination within the scenario?

The decoys who take part in the trial will also be awarded cash prizes. There will be a decoy judge. The decoys will be judged on their physical ability, smoothness and naturalness in the suit, their "acting" ability in the scenario, their ability to follow direction, and their ability to catch dogs safely. Points will also be awarded from the contestants themselves. Decoys may be moved during the day, so as to give each one a chance to display their skills. If a decoy has not been able to demonstrate fully, because of the scenario they have been working, or due to some other factor,   he/she will be asked to do a sample scenario after the trial, with a dog that will do the scenario well, so that they may show their skills. The decoy competition will be judged by a decoy judge, and will also take input from the panel judges. Each contestant will be allowed one vote, for favorite decoy, and these votes will be tabulated as well. Each decoy must provide his/her own suit. It must fit well, and be of suitable thickness so as to provide a thick biting surface, but not too large as to appear ridiculous. Decoys are encouraged to dress, or use other props, to appear as natural as possible. Hats, briefcases, sunglasses, coats etc., can all be used. If the suit the decoy is wearing makes it impossible for the decoy to carry or use a firearm or other weapon, he or she will be penalized. IF the decoy cannot get up off the ground without assistance, the decoy will be penalized.
